Edition of CNN Money has created an interesting graph
showing a 6-year history of the multimedia player iPod, which during this time
had to go as a main source of revenue for Apple and is now almost completely
lost against the iPhone smartphone and tablet iPad.
In the development of the famous players Apple holds the
classical scheme of "disruptive product" - the emergence of a
fundamentally new device, which deprives the competitiveness of the other
products present on the market. The only difference from the classical scheme
is that this time the manufacturer has "undermined" their own primary
source of income.
Becoming a byword for MP3-players, as later iPad - for
tablets, debuted in 2004, the iPod to the first quarter of 2007 provided almost
half of the revenue Apple - more than any other manufacturer's product.
But next year, players iPod Classic, iPod nano and iPod
shuffle lost that role models iPod touch and smartphones iPhone. Gradually they
walked iPad tablet computers and Mac. Players are now in second place in the
list from the end of the six main sources of revenue Apple, ordered by
contribution to total revenue, ahead of only the sale of accessories.
However, do not think that Apple «kill» iPod by mistake. One
must have a shrewd mind and a good understanding of the market to sell in huge
volumes at first a simple player, then the player with touch screen, then
touch-screen smartphone that can play a role player. If you follow this
pattern, the Apple engineers are now working on a device that will replace the
iPhone. What could it be for a product?
